The Virtual World!

Hello friends! How are you all? πŸ™‚ I’ll tell you about this little mission I am working on. Since the last week, I’ve been trying to bring this stupid social media obsession of mine, to an end. And yayy, I am getting successful too. I am walking towards the peaceful state called as ‘Self-Control‘. πŸ‘¦

So, something caught my attention a few days back. I was pondering over how this technological advancement has affected our lives. It feels like we are living in a virtual world. Surely, mobile phones connect the world together, but it feels like we are getting distant. Things aren’t real anymore. And we have readily accepted this lifestyle. We are living in a virtual-world. There’s a lack of feelings. 😐

If I talk about myself, I was a completely different person two years back. The moment I was handed a mobile phone, everything changed. πŸ˜› I have started missing my handwriting. Even though I have a bad handwriting, but ‘writing on a paper, with a pen’ was a very different process.

image

Writing happens rarely these days. While in the college, we prefer clicking pictures of the notes to taking all the trouble of writing them down.Β πŸ˜›

Two years back, I used to have a diary exclusively for writing my Poems into it, but after I joined WordPress, I’ve stopped writing into it at all. It was very very very precious to me.

image

But, today it rests in that locked drawer of mine. It must really crave for oxygen sometimes, no? I let it breathe in the fresh air today, only cause I had to click its pictures. I am so cruel.Β πŸ˜‚

Then, I remember how I used to search for meaningful quotes and thoughts from magazines and newspapers, and note them down into my diary. That beauuutiful diary of mine. I used to read it during free lectures and find instant inspiration.

image

My friends used to adore it so much. Some even asked me to gift it to them, hehe. But these days, when I find a nice quote, I just take a screenshot of it. (Only to never reflect back at it ever again.πŸ˜›)

Also, I used to have a different copy for writing drafts of my poems, and whenever I felt like writing, I used to sit in a silent corner with that copy, and pen down my thoughts. Today, applications like ‘Evernote‘ have replaced the charm of that copy. Even right now, I am not Writing but Typing all of this. 😐

Two days back, a friend of mine accidentally published some list of items on his blog, and that’s where I realised, we are using the WordPress editor for noting down our daily life things too. Has this ever happened with you, like something unwanted and extremely personal got published on your blog by chance, and that got you really embarrassed?! 😹 (If yes, I would love to know in the comments.)

Few years back, I used to read REAL books, I used to purchase them and read. I had a collection of books, some gifted, and some purchased. Have a look!Β Though, I haven’t read most of them still. πŸ˜›

image

But today, E-Books and Kindle have replaced the beauty of reading a real book. The touch and the feel is lost somewhere. Yes, I do know of people who still read Real Hardcover Books, a big big cheers to them. In this virtual world, you people are still holding onto the real things. I really appreciate that. πŸ’™

Then, next, whenever my parents or my friends had a birthday, I used to do special things for them. I loved making greeting cards, or write letters to them. Though, I really sucked at it. πŸ˜‚

image

But, that ritual formed a special ineffable connection to my loved ones, it had a different charm. I still remember, once I wrote a poem and gifted it to my bestie, and she was in tears! She was crying with joy and she hugged me tight and thanked me, and even made a handmade card for me the next day. That was just sooooo cute. 😻

So, I always used to draw and sketch and paint the cards and used to sprinkle a few lines of poetry on them too, hehe. It took hours to add perfection to them. ☺ But today, all you’ve got to do is to Google a birthday cake and send it to your friends wishing them. And it takes less than a minute to do that. πŸ˜‚ Huh, so will it really be a HAPPY birthday for them? You didn’t even do ‘zara si bhi mehnat’ for them. It feels like all the love has gone missing these days. πŸ™„

Also, I used to be so crazy about different types of Pens and beautiful Diaries. It’s like they had a voice of their own. They used to speak to me. Be it any occasion, I used to always wait for someone to gift me Pens or Books or Diaries. They were love. ❀

image

Even now, I am absolutely crazy about Pens, but the problem is,Β  I don’t know what to do with them now. What do I write with them? 😹 Still, collecting them is super-fun!Β

So, all I am saying is, technology has definitely helped us in many ways, but we have lost touch! The real charm of reading, writing, living, it is lost somewhere. There was a beauty in living in the real world, though a mobile has connected us to the world where we couldn’t have reached ever, it has distanced us from the people who we really care about. Don’t you think so? πŸ€”

I would love to know how Mobile phones have changed your life. Do you still read Books or have you switched to Kindle? Do you keep a journal or Diary? What things do you do on your loved ones’ birthdays to make them feel that you care? Has someone ever given you a gift of words? 😻 How did that make you feel? Also, have you ever used WordPress editor and accidentally published something stupid? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Do share in the comments section. Thankyou!

Keep shining!

  1. I still read books the normal way. As for my phone, with having un-installed whatsapp, the phone is as good as dead, besides the WP app that makes me want to use it. FB is occasional, so is Twitter.
I’m not sure if its self control or just plain boredom, but if I look at it on the bright side – my life has become much more simpler and I’m happy about it.
I used to design cards on Corel Draw for my friends or family members, I’ve stopped the whole idea of cards all together now. Much has changed over the years, not sure whether good or bad

    1. Hello Sirji, how’re you? And yayy, exactly. While writing this post, I definitely remembered you when I said ‘those few people who still read Real Books’. ☺

Hehe, I agree to this. Uninstalling a few apps makes life simple, no notifications to check, no messages, no drama. πŸ˜› We can focus more on the things that really matter.

And wow, you designed cards? That is nice. But why did you stop? I would like to see those designs hehe. I’m sure they would’ve been amazing. ☺☺

And thankyou for your comment. Good to talk to you after so long. πŸ˜‡

  2. Soniya, I remember your craze about books and specially diary. Whenever we went for shopping you saw only diaries which were so expensive and I told you to write in any copy or we gave you so many diaries which were gifted. But you were crazy about some special type of diary. I remember how much time you were giving for making cards for all special occasions and when you wrote something. πŸ˜„ Now a days I don’t know when you write and how early you finish your work. This is good or bad I don’t know but i was also enjoying with you when you were doing this with pen paper. Always be happy and do what you want to do with whole heart. God bless you. 😊😊

    1. Haww, Mumma, I almost forgot about those expensive diaries. You did a big mistake by reminding me of them. πŸ˜‚ That Fairy Tale wali diary, the Pink one with a little locker by the side, I lovvvved it. ☺ Mujhe wo chaaaaaiye. We will go to the Diary shop and we will purchase it now. 😣 Even I used to enjoy a lot when I used to read out those drafts to you, but I still wait for your suggestions when I am posting something important. ☺☺ Bring me my favourite diary and pen, then we will continue our discussions. 😹 Love you Maa! πŸ’™

  4. You’ve raised a very valid point. Technology has changed the dynamics of our lives. We’re still connected to our friends via WhatsApp, fb and all that but it’s not the same as continuing the real connection. I have switched over to Kindle but the one thing that hasn’t changed much for me is writing. I still keep a diary for noting down blog related stuff. Ever since my SD card got fried and I realized that you’ve got to do back ups unless you want to lose your stuff… I started writing down in that diary. On the rare occasion that my blog diary isn’t with me, I use Google docs because that way the data will be stored on cloud and I’ll never lose it… Even if my SD card gets corrupted!
